URGENT ACTION REQUIRED : Colonel By Counts but needs your help NOW !!!!
Canada Day "Picnic in the Park" a great success.
Beacon Hill Park – Against all odds, the sun was shining this Canada Day as children of all ages began to flock to Beacon Hill Park to celebrate Canada’s 142nd birthday. This would be the 1st Annual “Picnic in the Park” hosted by the Beacon Hill North Community Association. “This is what community is all about and as association, something I look forward to continuing.” said Tim Tierney, President of the Beacon Hill North community association. Tierney also said “Plans are already underway for a winter carnival and we hope for the same level of success”.
The day began at 10am with a scavenger hunt , organized by Wendy Shaughnessy. The teams of hunters would search the park looking for odds and ends hidden everywhere, winning prizes based on what they had found. The fun did not stop there as volunteer Britta Cox rounded up the troops and followed up with more activities in the park including 3 legged races, potatoes sac races and of course a water balloon toss.
Out came the red paint and volunteers began painting maple leafs on the children; as well they got to make posters and flags at the arts and crafts table.
Now that the children were drained of energy, painted and wet, that was the best time to pull out the cotton candy machine and fill them with sugar. Local resident and volunteer Dan Ruddy, setup up his Cotton Candy making machine and dished out the pink floss to the content of many. Many had the choice to DIY (do it yourself) cotton candy cones, even Jack tries his hand at making a cotton candy cone.
All full of sugar, they packed the Beacon Hill North community centre awaiting the start of the magic show performed by magician extraordinaire Chris Philsworth. Chris entertained the audience of onlookers for an hour even bringing up many of the crowd to take part in the acts. Just as the sugar seemed to be wearing off, out came the Canada inspired cupcakes and some feezies to refresh the kids.
In the afternoon, many were entertained by the Johnsons Taekwon-do demostation, showing us the power of the mind by kicking over 6 feet in the air, self defense moves and breaking boards (some 3,4,5 boards thick!). In the backdrop 3 jets screamed by to celebrate Canada Day adding to the excitement.
Music continued throughout the day, as well as sporting events like baseball and soccer took place in the park. Many thanks to all that took part in putting together such a wonderful event.
