NEWS RELEASEFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEBEACON HILL NORTH - The Beacon Hill North Community Association (BHNCA) adds their name to a growing list of supporters of the National Capital Commissions study recommendation for a Kettle Island bridge crossing.
The Roche-NCE study that was funded by the National Capital Commission identified the Kettle Island crossing as the cheapest, with the least impact on the environment and the least divisive on communities. This is the third such report to identify Kettle Island as the best solution.
At the expressed concern of residents in Beacon Hill, the BHNCA established a standing committee to evaluate the impact of the Interprovincial Bridge recommendations and impact on the community. Tim Tierney, President of the BHNCA says "We are a family based community, and any other alternative would have a major impact on the community".
Some of the items that the standing committee evaluated in regards to the proposed bridge site included :
Any other alternatives east of the Kettle island recommendation would result in gridlock on residential roadways. "The community is primarily comprised of schools, parks and daycares and any alternative east of Kettle Island would see a great amount of traffic travelling down the Montreal Road and Ogilvie Road corridors." says Tierney.
"The simple act of crossing the street to go to a park could turn into a dangerous game for children and would divide the community in half" said Tierney
On Friday November 21st 2008 the BHNCA will be kicking off an "Interprovincial Bridge Awareness Campaign" as a result of much misinformation or propaganda that has been circulated. The focus of the campaign will be to present the results of the standing committee in detail including the study data, maps and side effects of selecting any alternative to the Kettle Island site.
Furthermore, the campaign will provide tools for people to let their elected representatives (at the Municipal, Provincial and Federal levels) know how they feel. There is a sense of disappointment by residents on the statements made by elected officials in recent months on the issue of the bridge and we will be seeking clarity during this campaign.
The campaign (launching Friday November 21st 2008 - noon) "Kettle Makes Sense" can be found at www.KettleMakesSense.com or on the http://www.bhnca.com/ website.
